About Coyote Adventures

About Us

Coyote Adventures, Ltd. is legally domiciled, incorporated in the state of Delaware. Coyote Adventures operates as a tour operator for rafting in the Grand Canyon and adventure excursions in the famous national parks of the lower Rocky Mountains.

Gary EveThe inspiration of Coyote Adventures came in 1972 when Gary Eve worked on the Colorado River as guide and motorman for a white-water rafting company operating in Arizona’s Grand Canyon. Having experienced the wonders of the Grand Canyon, in late 1972 Gary returned to the University of Illinois to finish his undergraduate degree in business.

Though the fascination and excitement of the Canyon never diminished, his insurance and international freight forwarding career moved him successively from Chicago to Philadelphia then to Pittsburgh, and finally Milan, Italy.

Joe LevinthalJoe Levinthal, a 20 year guide and white-water river veteran, partnered with Gary and Coyote Adventures "on a handshake". Shortly thereafter, the company was legally constituted in Delaware.

Joe was born and raised in the state of Utah, and has been hunting, fishing or guiding for most of his life. Joe is studying and will shortly finish his degree in Astrophysics and Mathematics from the University of Flagstaff, Arizona.

Guides

The guides are experienced outdoorsmen and white-water guides, and most of them were raised and trained in Utah or Arizona. All guides, including the rafting guides, have CPR training as well as advanced first aid courses (Wilderness First Response certificate).

Our senior guide has 20 years of experience in the Grand Canyon, The Snake and Cataract rivers in Utah. They are trained in wilderness survival and have all studied the geology of the Grand Canyon.

Beyond cooking and assisting the passengers, they will also entertain you with old stories and personal anecdotes. They will probably also sing for you!

Grand Canyon

Desert History of Southern Utah

Southern UtahAs the Rocky Mountains descend south toward Mexico, the tall peaks seem to lower farther and farther towards sea level. However, in southern Utah and northern Arizona this is an illusion and is the geological history of what is known as the Colorado Plateau.

Approximately 65 million years ago, the lower plates of the earth’s surface started to uplift and the prior seabed's of an immense inland ocean became exposed to the sun and high altitude desert area conditions. Subsequent millenniums have eroded the soft sandstone and softer rocks and left pinnacles or ridges of erosion-resistance rocks. The extraordinary rock formations and natural bridges are almost exclusively formed by the erosion by both wind and water.

Grand Canyon and History

Grand CanyonThe entirety of the Grand Canyon is in northern Arizona and stretches almost from just below the southern border of Utah to the eastern edge of Nevada. The great Colorado river which originates in the northwest of the state of Colorado and cuts its path through southern part of the state of Utah has formed and sculpted America’s greatest natural treasure over hundreds of millions of years. Every visitor to the canyon will immediately develop an interest in geology.

Sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks can easily be seen in the colorful layers of the canyon. Indeed, the oldest rock strata in the Grand Canyon dates to two billion years ago. The vastness and colors of the canyon are beyond description and for most of the length of the Grand Canyon the vertical depth from the river to the plateau above exceed 1 mile or approximately 1,800 meters.

Native American Indians

Native American IndiansIndigenous natives have lived in the southwest of America for over 10,000 years. Many of their early paintings and sandstone village constructions are still in existence and can be visited. During the first week of our trip, we will travel and visit the Navajo Indian reservation in the proximity of Monument Valley National Park. Subsequently, while in the Grand Canyon, we will stop and hike in both the Havasupai Indian Reservation and the Hualapi.
